Windy conditions (gusts over 40 mph) and the river being high made fishing conditions tough all day long. The hardest part was trying to keep the kayaks in place to make the proper casts. All the fish caught were in areas out of the wind and in slow current. Our target was smallmouth, but maybe the spawn is going on right now. Water temp was 64 degrees. There are a few tricky riffles through this section at this water level. A tree had recently fallen across near the take out and resulted in a minor portage. Most notably though, we saw hundreds of turtles along the way. One softshell turtle I saw had to be about the size of a manhole cover! Two bald eagles nest were spotted in large sycamores closed to Manes and we could see the males searching for additional food overhead.Windy conditions (gusts over 40 mph) and the river being high made fishing conditions tough all day long. Although this was on the upper Gasconade, the river was already very large here. The first half of the trip consisted of some very large, slow pools punctuated with some good runs. The latter part of this trip was faster. After our lunch stop, we did find the perfect shady spot for a "rivercado" snack.Although this was on the upper Gasconade, the river was already very large here. The river was flowing and the water was murky. There were no obstacles in this short distance and canoe travel was fine. The level was high due to the massive rainfall event over the area last week (Wed night and Thu). I believe a long float just on the Gasconade could have been attempted at this level. The river was flowing and the water was murky.
